R: Where do you tattoo?
BG: At Good Times Tattoo in Shoreditch, London.
/
R: How long have you been tattooing?
BG: Four years.
/
R: How did you get into tattooing?
BG: I needed a job, haha. No, that’s it. . . I needed something to do after Uni. I was always into art and painting and it just seemed like a natural way to just to go with it. I had friends that were into tattooing. My husband (boyfriend at the time) was kind enough to show me the way. I got an apprenticeship at the place that he worked at and that’s how it started.
/
R: What style are you known for?
BG: It’s very much oriental, very Tibetan, Buddhist and Indian influence with a traditional feel to it. Quite bold lines, very minimal colour. Very bold and simple.
/
R: What is your definition of excellent client service?
BG: I think just chat to them. Don’t be quiet. Just hang out as if you were tattooing your mate. They’re just another human being so just talk to them. I don’t know. . . They always walk out happy so I must be doing something right.

INTERVIEW PART 2/2

R: What style are you known for?
JC: I’d say it’s kind of neo geometric / neo traditional / watercolour. There are a lot of slashes in there (laughs).
/
R: What is your definition of excellent client service?
JC: Honestly, I think the trick is, you really need to listen to what the client wants. A lot of the time people come in and they have insane ideas and they want someone else’s tattoo. I think the main thing is to get the whole point across: why are they getting this tattoo? Is there an underlying reason? Or, is there a reason why they like it? I go from there and build something that flows with their body and works with the surrounding tattoos or just even bare skin. I think as a tattoo artist it’s something that you take quite seriously - someone is trusting you with something that should last the rest of their life and it’s quite important to get that right. So as you’re designing something you get their input. If they want to change something, that’s cool. Don't be offended by something they’re saying because in the end it’s going on their skin. You do have to try to guide them a bit because some people want tiny writing that in five years is going to blur together and you can’t read it. It’s not about that - it’s about getting everything right.

INTERVIEW PART 1/2
/
Name: Jenna Chasinghawk

R: Where do you tattoo?
JC: I tattoo at Northside Tattooz Newcastle. I’m the only female Native American tattoo artist in the UK. I try to bring a lot of my native geometric influence from my culture into my artwork. I mostly do line work and black work. I do try to mix a bit of colour in with it because, just where my culture comes from, I think it’s good to have a balance. It’s nice to see some native stuff with watercolour, or a bit of flash in it, but it depends on the client obviously.
/
R: How long have you been tattooing?
JC: For about two years out of my apprenticeship so, all in all, a bit more than 4 years.
/
R: How did you get into tattooing?
JC: It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. As a female artist, it’s something that’s very hard to get into. I’m quite selective about who tattoos me and what I have on my body just because of my culture; if you don’t have the right tattoos when you die, your spirit stays here. Because I’m not completely covered yet it was quite hard to get a job and be taken seriously. It took about four years to actually finally convince somebody to take me on as their apprentice.
