This picture shows a luftwaffe flak 88 crew as they prepare to fire on an oncoming formation of allied bombers.
the flak 88 is probably the most famous german anti-aircraft and artillery gun of the second world war. the allies could not match its strength and power in the early years, and when it became the main gun of the tiger 2, its legacy continued in the form of a tank.
flak 88's could down any allied aircraft, even a b-17 if the shot was right, but the germans just didn't have enough of them or didn't have them in the right positions a lot of the time when allied aerial bombardments occurred. when you were in the right position though, they could deal immense amount of damage to their intended enemy.
during the strategic bombing of german occupied europe and germany itself, the germans would positions heir flak guns to hit the enemy first, and then later their interceptors would swoop in when the allies lost their escorts and attempt to do as much damage as possible. this all changed though once the allies introduced the p-51d, which was capable of flying with bombers all the way to their targets and back, reducing the slim advantage the luftwaffe had.
the flak was just a very influential and effective weapon that made itself known on the battlefield, and its reputation proved its deadly ability.
